Did you know that less than 3% of civil cases reach a trial verdict? That means around 97% of cases are resolved by settlement or dismissal. Whether you’re preparing a case for trial or settlement, your case is only as strong as the foundation you build it on.
In this episode, we kick off a four-part series on the step-by-step process of handling a civil case from start to finish. Handling a civil case involves a series of well-defined steps, each crucial for ensuring thorough and effective representation of your client. As an associate, you’ll be asked by your partner to do a lot of the heavy lifting, especially in the beginning. This could involve interviewing witnesses, drafting discovery, or conducting legal research. Without having the experience of working a case from start to finish, it can be hard to understand the importance of these individual tasks.
We’ll break down these steps into four key phases: Initial Evaluation, Discovery Plan, Experts, and Settlement/Closing.
Remember, each case is unique, and while this checklist provides a structured approach, always be ready to adapt to specific circumstances.
